Canada: Elected Officials’ Salaries and Benefits

Explore what elected officials receive while serving and what may continue after they leave. Amounts are shown in the country’s own currency, with dates and official sources.

First release · reviewed October 9, 2026.

This guide includes verified federal records, selected regional and municipal examples, and research routes for every region. It is not yet a complete list of every elected official’s package. “Not yet verified” means the records still need checking; it does not mean zero pay or no benefits.

Salary, taxable allowances, insurance, retirement benefits and reimbursed work expenses are different. Annual gross Canadian amounts and monthly net Mexican amounts cannot be compared directly.

Benefits during service

Members have access to medical, dental and life-insurance plans. Staff and office budgets, equipment and parliamentary travel resources support their work and should be accounted for separately from salary. Official entitlements overview and Members’ Allowances and Services Manual explain eligibility and coverage.

After leaving federal office: conditions and duration
ItemWho qualifies / what determines itHow long
PensionAt least six years of pensionable service. For service from January 1, 2016, an unreduced pension is available at 65; a reduced pension may start at 55. Earlier service has different rules. The eligible lifetime pension continues until death; temporary components and survivor benefits follow separate rules.
SeveranceCertain departing MPs who are not eligible for an immediate pension may receive 50% of their annual allowance plus eligible additional role pay.A severance entitlement, not an ongoing full salary; confirm eligibility and payment arrangements.
Closing-office travelDeparting MPs have limited travel to close parliamentary offices.Usually within 30 days: the entitlements overview specifies trips for election departures and resignations.
Insurance after departureDepends on the benefit plan and pension eligibility.A uniform duration has not been verified here; consult the manual and plan administrator.

The pension is calculated under the plan, not automatically equal to a former member’s full salary. Canada’s appointed Senate is a separate institution; its compensation schedule is not yet compiled here.

The city’s benefit policy lists employer-paid health, dental and basic life coverage, and OMERS pension membership with stated exceptions. Lifetime retiree benefits require being over 55, at least nine years of qualifying council pension service, and an immediate OMERS pension. On resignation, benefits end on the resignation date; without retirement eligibility, an unsuccessful election departure generally ends coverage November 30 of that election year.

Municipal Code Chapter 223 sets eligible severance at one-twelfth of annual remuneration for each consecutive service year, prorated for part-years and subject to a lifetime twelve-year service cap and exclusions. This is up to one year’s remuneration as severance, not twelve years of salary. Pension and retiree insurance are separate benefits.

Ask for the complete package

Send this request to the legislature’s finance office, municipal clerk, treasury or transparency unit. Specify the office and the year. Ask for records covering elected officials, so staff benefits are not mistakenly included.

“Please provide the current compensation records for [office] in [community or region], including:

  1. Gross salary or allowance, payment frequency, effective date and any additional pay for other roles.
  2. Insurance and other benefits, the public cost and the official’s own contributions.
  3. Pension or retirement savings plan: qualifying service, contribution rates, retirement age and calculation rules.
  4. What continues after leaving office, when each benefit starts and ends, and the conditions for receiving it.
  5. Severance, transition or termination payments: formula, maximum, payment timing and legal authority.
  6. Travel reimbursements, office and staff budgets, listed separately from personal compensation.

Please link the enacted pay schedule, benefit-plan documents and latest available payroll records. Identify proposed changes separately from rules already in force.”

What does this help us understand?

Fair compensation can make public service accessible to people with ordinary incomes. Clear records also let citizens examine costs and accountability. Compare duties, hours, cost of living, tax treatment and pension contributions before drawing conclusions from salary alone.

Our aim is to understand the systems and improve them through informed participation.

Help complete the records
