Mexico: Elected Officials’ Salaries and Benefits
Explore what elected officials receive while serving and what may continue after they leave. Amounts are shown in the country’s own currency, with dates and official sources.
This guide includes verified federal records, selected regional and municipal examples, and research routes for every region. It is not yet a complete list of every elected official’s package. “Not yet verified” means the records still need checking; it does not mean zero pay or no benefits.
Salary, taxable allowances, insurance, retirement benefits and reimbursed work expenses are different. Annual gross Canadian amounts and monthly net Mexican amounts cannot be compared directly.

“Dieta” is the payment for holding the legislative office. These are net amounts after the applicable deductions, not gross salary or total annual compensation. The manuals allow authorised updates; later payroll records should be checked.
Benefits in the elected-legislator sections
The deputies’ manual lists a year-end bonus of 40 days of gross dieta (or the applicable proportional amount), ISSSTE/FOVISSSTE/SAR and solidarity savings, and basic life insurance of 40 times monthly gross dieta. The senators’ Annex 3 also lists 40 days of dieta as the year-end bonus, social-security and retirement-savings arrangements, and life coverage of 40 months of dieta. These insurance sums are coverage amounts, not extra salary paid each month.
Read Annex 1, section III: federal deputies and Annex 3: elected senators. Staff-only vacation, seniority and collective retirement-insurance provisions must not be assumed to apply to elected legislators.
What continues after leaving office?
Retirement depends on the applicable ISSSTE regime, qualifying contribution history, age and account or plan rules. Holding a legislative seat does not by itself establish entitlement to a lifetime pension. Official individual-account pension explanation describes the standard old-age route at 65 with at least 25 contribution years, as well as other routes and conditions.
PENSIONISSSTE payment options distinguishes a lifetime annuity from programmed withdrawals linked to account resources. The exact post-office insurance duration, final bonus, any severance and individual pension entitlement have not been verified here; request those separately from each chamber. The presidency’s complete salary and post-office package also remains to be compiled.
Records for all 32 federal entities
Governors, local deputies and municipal officials have distinct pay schedules. Use the relevant body’s “Transparencia”, “Remuneraciones”, “Tabulador”, “Prestaciones” and “Presupuesto de egresos” sections. Salary ranges are not proof of an individual’s actual payment.
National Transparency Platform provides an additional route to published records and requests. Select the state, then the specific obligated body — executive, congress or municipality. Ask for the complete package
Send this request to the legislature’s finance office, municipal clerk, treasury or transparency unit. Specify the office and the year. Ask for records covering elected officials, so staff benefits are not mistakenly included.

What does this help us understand?
Fair compensation can make public service accessible to people with ordinary incomes. Clear records also let citizens examine costs and accountability. Compare duties, hours, cost of living, tax treatment and pension contributions before drawing conclusions from salary alone.
